John's painting instructions encourage experimentation with under painting techniques in pastel painting. He focuses on the necessary editing steps whether painting from a photo or an outdoor scene. The student will learn what to include and what to leave out. He spends time on explaining how some color values clash together while others tend to "melt" together. Emphasis is directed on how strong design elements can help punch out a dynamic composition.
